Dear "Weight-Challenged" Friend,

I'm Dr. Nicole Gullick, a family practice physician in Tucson, Arizona who has replaced the traditional disease-focused approach of primary care with one that is dedicated towards preventing disease through lifestyle changes. Back in college, I became addicted to fad diets,
and despite plenty of exercise, I continued to gain weight.

I tried every diet pill out there - from appetite suppressants to fat and carbohydrate-blockers. I even took laxatives, thinking it would help flatten my tummy! I never understood the importance of balanced nutrition, and I just kept following the latest dieting trends, from low-fat to low-carb and everything in between. But no matter what I did, I would only lose a pound or two, and then I'd gain those pounds right back again - and more!

Well, after a couple years of this lifestyle, you can guess what happened to me.

I got heavier and heavier and my self-esteem reached an all-time low.

I was frustrated beyond words, and I could not understand why my body would not give up the fat! I became an expert at counting calories, but it didn't seem to matter that I was hardly eating anything at all. I still could not lose weight.

As I became educated about the human body through my medical training, I slowly developed a better understanding about how food and nutrients affect fat storage in the body. Beyond medical school, I began voraciously seeking research-based, well-established, nutritional information rather than falling prey to those dieting hypes spread by unscrupulous, unqualified authors and other weight-loss industry "gurus."

What an eye-opener it was to finally realize
that I was programming my body to store fat - not to release it!

I slowly replaced my invalid nutritional concepts with ones that actually worked, and I started to apply them. Lo and behold, I slowly (but surely) lost all my unwanted fat, and I actually felt like I was reversing my aging. In fact, I now have more energy than I did in my 20's, and I am healthier now than I have ever been in my life.

But it took a medical degree and a couple of decades of trial and error for me to succeed against my weight issues - that, and some dedicated research to discover what truly works and what doesn't when it comes to losing weight.

How My Personal Struggles Became My Life's Purpose

After I completed my my medical training, I practiced medicine in a variety of clinical settings, including primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, intensive care, and physical rehabilitation.

During this time, I saw the devastating effects of an unhealthy lifestyle. I strengthened my belief in the power of preventive medicine, and I counseled all my patients to modify their unhealthy eating behaviors, as well as to make lifestyle changes that almost instantly resulted in dramatic weight loss.

Then, a number of years ago, I was finally able to open a medical practice that was dedicated to wellness instead of disease. I mostly attracted patients suffering from overweight and obesity - both of which are extremely detrimental risk factors in a vast number of diseases.

I began offering intensive coaching for weight loss and physical fitness, empowering those under my care to take charge of their health by adopting my powerful weight loss strategies into their everyday lives.

Through my membership in The North American Association for the Study of Obesity, I stay up-to-date on the latest research into obesity, nutrition, and exercise.

Why Do Most Diet Programs Fail?

1.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of biological science,

2.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of behavioral science, and

3.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of psychological science.

To elaborate a little, most diet programs fail because they focus on short-term gimmicks instead of long-term solutions. They trick you into using "easy" techniques that will help you lose a few easy pounds (mostly water, not fat), but they do nothing to help you enact and maintain a long-term, permanent, "healthy living" lifestyle that is based on sound principles of biological, behavioral, and psychological science.

In short, most weight loss programs are based on a "Deprivation Model" that expects you to severely decrease your food intake AND to exponentially increase your level of physical activity at the same time. While you may think that seems like the right thing to do, it simply is not sustainable over long periods of time. You can't keep it up!

So, what happens is you end up stuck in a cycle of "Yo-Yo Dieting." Yo-Yo Dieting is when you gain some initial success at losing weight, but you aren't able to maintain that success over the long-term, and you gain the weight right back. Then you seek out a different "restrictive" diet plan in order to lose that weight you regained, and the same cycle starts all over again.

You see, when you deprive your body of the nutrition it needs - while at the same time imposing strenuous physical activity upon it - it's true that you will lose some weight at first. But in a very short period of time, your body will go into something called "Starvation Mode," which means your metabolism will shut down completely.

Now, when your metabolism shuts down, your body can't burn enough calories to lose fat. In fact, it does the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you want it to do: it hoards all its fat stores in order to "ride out" what it perceives as a famine. This is a defense mechanism for survival that has been conditioned into our bodies over many generations of time, and the end result is that you stop losing fat.

"Deprivation Mode" Diets
ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE OVER THE LONG TERM!
Medical Science Dictates that THEY WILL FAIL EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

This is where the psychological and behavioral aspects of weight loss come into play. If you aren't learning the psychological and behavioral techniques required to develop and sustain long-term, healthy-living habits, then you have no chance of keeping your weight off permanently.

The problem is, no matter how much you want to, you just can't sustain the willpower to stay on a severely restricted diet for an "endless" amount of time. So, you either quit the diet because it stops producing the results you saw initially OR because it becomes impossible to keep consuming whatever restrictive food the diet calls for (salad, or whatever).

The end result is that you revert back to your old eating habits and behaviors "for just a little while." But before you know it, you are right back where you started from. Just like a yo-yo.
